Firm Foundation

Pastor Jay continues his summer meandering with this weeks sermon “Firm Foundation” from 2 Timothy 2:19.

2 Timothy 2:19 (ESV)

But God’s firm foundation stands, bearing this seal: “The Lord knows those who are his,” and, “Let everyone who names the name of the Lord depart from iniquity.”

Even the most cataclysmic changes that rock our world cannot move the foundation of our faith.

  • We have God’s push back.
  • We have God’s promise.
  • We have God’s command.

Parent Connection Questions:

  • Think about the biggest building you’ve ever seen. Which one was it?
  • How much do you think it weighs? Could you move it?
  • When difficult times come up, why should we rely on God?
  • How can we remember to trust God in difficult times?

What Can I Do

Pastor Jay continues his summer meandering with this weeks sermon “What Can I Do” from Philippians 4:10-13.

Philippians 4:10-13 (ESV)

I rejoiced in the Lord greatly that now at length you have revived your concern for me. You were indeed concerned for me, but you had no opportunity.  Not that I am speaking of being in need, for I have learned in whatever situation I am to be content.  I know how to be brought low, and I know how to abound. In any and every circumstance, I have learned the secret of facing plenty and hunger, abundance and need.  I can do all things through him who strengthens me.

I can do all things.

  • I can be content when I have support from the rest of the body
  • I can be content in every situation.
  • I can be content when I am brought low.
  • I can be content when I abound.
  • I can do all this through him who strengthens me.

Parent Connection Questions:

  • What makes you feel happy?
  • Can you think of anything you’re missing that would make you feel happier?
  • What are we saying to God when we’re not happy with what we have?
  • What is one way you can fight discontentment this week?

Myth-busting the Gay Marriage Thing

Pastor Jay continues his summer meandering with this weeks sermon “Myth-busting the Gay Marriage Thing” from Matthew 19:3-8.

Matthew 19:3-8 (ESV)

And Pharisees came up to him and tested him by asking, “Is it lawful to divorce one’s wife for any cause?” He answered, “Have you not read that he who created them from the beginning made them male and female, and said, ‘Therefore a man shall leave his father and his mother and hold fast to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh’? So they are no longer two but one flesh. What therefore God has joined together, let not man separate.” They said to him, “Why then did Moses command one to give a certificate of divorce and to send her away?” He said to them, “Because of your hardness of heart Moses allowed you to divorce your wives, but from the beginning it was not so.

Let’s look beyond the easy myths we want to believe.

  • Myth #1: The Bible does not give us a clear definition of marriage.
  • Myth #2: The Bible is unclear about homosexuality.
  • Myth #3: We are not called to judge unbelievers, so we need to be quiet.
  • Myth #4: We are not called to change society.
  • Myth #5: We cannot love people if we are pointing out their sin.

Parent Connection Questions:

  • What happens when you disagree with your parents? Who has the final word?
  • What happens when you read a Bible verse and don’t like what it says? (maybe it talks about something you’re struggling with)
  • Who has the final word between us and God? Why?
  • Do you find it easy or hard to allow God’s rules to be the most important?

Knowing What You’ve Got

Pastor Jay continues his summer meandering with this weeks sermon “Knowing What You’ve Got” from Psalm 16:5-6.

Psalm 16:5-6 (ESV)

The Lord is my chosen portion and my cup; you hold my lot. The lines have fallen for me in pleasant places; indeed, I have a beautiful inheritance.

When you have the Lord, you have it all.

  • He is your good possession.
  • He keeps your good possession.
  • He makes your good possession a delight.

Parent Connection Questions:

  • What is your favorite thing you own? Why?
  • How valuable is it? How valuable is it to someone else?
  • How valuable are you to God?
  • Make a reminder to look at this week to remind you of how God sees you!
