Expecting the Spirit

Pastor Jay continues his sermon series, Be Encouraged, Brothers with “Expecting the Spirit” from 1 Thessalonians 5:19-22.

1 Thessalonians 5:19-22 (ESV)

Do not quench the Spirit. Do not despise prophecies, but test everything; hold fast what is good. Abstain from every form of evil.

In Christ, God’s will, is pretty easy to know

  • Do not quench the Spirit.
  • Do not despise prophecies.
  • Test everything.
  • Hold fast what is good.
  • Abstain from what is evil.

Parent Connection Questions:

  • Who is one person you feel you can always trust?  Parents?  A certain friend?
  • How do you know they are trustworthy?
  • Paul says in today’s Scripture to “test” things.  What does he mean?
  • Paul also says to get rid of evil and hold on to good.  How can you do that this week?

Finding The Way

Pastor Jon leads this weeks sermon with “Finding The Way”, from Isaiah 30:19-22

Isaiah 30:19-22 (ESV)

For a people shall dwell in Zion, in Jerusalem; you shall weep no more. He will surely be gracious to you at the sound of your cry. As soon as he hears it, he answers you.  And though the Lord give you the bread of adversity and the water of affliction, yet your Teacher will not hide himself anymore, but your eyes shall see your Teacher.  And your ears shall hear a word behind you, saying, “This is the way, walk in it,” when you turn to the right or when you turn to the left.  Then you will defile your carved idols overlaid with silver and your gold-plated metal images. You will scatter them as unclean things. You will say to them, “Be gone!”

Finding the path God desires for us brings peace.

  • Difficult times are an unfortunate inevitability.
  • Christ gives the serenity our souls need.
  • That path becomes clear when you follow Him.

Parent Connection Questions:

  • Have you ever been lost before? What happened? How did you get “found”?
  • Who do you turn to when you have a hard time?
  • How can turning to Christ help when you’re in a hard time?

1 Thessalonians 5:16-18 (ESV)

Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.

In Christ, God’s will, is pretty easy to know

  • Rejoice always.
  • Pray without ceasing.
  • Give thanks in all circumstances.

Parent Connection Questions:

  • If you had to give someone some advice for life, what would it be?
  • Paul gives some short advice in 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18, what is it?
  • How can we pray without ceasing? Isn’t that hard when we’re sleeping?
  • Think of one way you could do each of the three things Paul mentions this week.

The Gospel Good

Pastor Jay continues his sermon series, Be Encouraged, Brothers with “The Gospel Good” from 1 Thessalonians 5:15.

1 Thessalonians 5:15 (ESV)

See that no one repays anyone evil for evil, but always seek to do good to one another and to everyone.

The gospel calls us to a better good than the lesser good we think we know.

  • Gospel good turns us away from personal vengeance.
  • Gospel good displaces evil with good.

Parent Connection Questions:

  • Think of a time when you wanted to “get someone back” for hurting you.
  • It’s easy to want to get back at someone, but is it ever the right thing to do?
  • The Bible tells us never to “repay evil for evil.” What does that mean?
  • Can you think of a way to remind yourself not to repay evil this week?

1 Thessalonians 5:14 (ESV)

And we urge you, brothers, admonish the idle, encourage the fainthearted, help the weak, be patient with them all.

We need the intervention of our brothers and sisters.

  • Admonish the idle.
  • Encourage the fainthearted.
  • Help the weak.
  • Be patient with them all.
