James 4:13-17 (ESV)

Come now, you who say, “Today or tomorrow we will go into such and such a town and spend a year there and trade and make a profit”— yet you do not know what tomorrow will bring. What is your life? For you are a mist that appears for a little time and then vanishes. Instead you ought to say, “If the Lord wills, we will live and do this or that.” As it is, you boast in your arrogance. All such boasting is evil. So whoever knows the right thing to do and fails to do it, for him it is sin.

There are things we can know about the future.

  • There are things we don’t know.
    • We don’t know if we’ll be alive.
    • We don’t know where we will be.
    • We don’t know what our profit will be.
    • We don’t know the size of the obstacles we will face.
    • We cannot know the good or evil we will receive.
    • We cannot know if Christ will come in 2015.
  • There are things we do know.
    • We will in fact be able to do all things through Christ.
    • We know that God will be in control.
    • We know His peace will always be at our disposal.
    • We know we don’t have to be afraid.
